The discovery begins with the parks which are vast expanses of natural landscapes and vegetation.
Labeled "Remarkable Garden", this 22-hectare national estate is the heir to the immense domain of the kings of Navarre. The wooded park and the Basse-Plante are the green lung of the city of Pau, a popular place for walking open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Take a break in the paths to admire magnificent views of the Pyrenees mountain range, and take advantage of your getaway to take a trip back in time to the Château de Pau.
This green space, created on the former property of Countess Anna de Noailles in 1878, is magnificent with its manicured paths leading to the bandstand and the bald cypress lake. Its English style was created by landscape architect Henri Martinet in 1898, showcasing the century-old trees and varied plants.

This is a verdant place adored by young and old alike. While adults gather tips for their vegetable patch or garden at the Gardener's House, children have fun in the playground or discover plants and insects in the educational garden. Bring strollers and a picnic for a wonderful family day out in the heart of 25 hectares of greenery accessible to the public among the 110 hectares of the estate.
We stay in Pau to have fun with the family in a play park that also welcomes athletes with 11 fitness equipment. Inaugurated in 2019, this green space in Pau is an ideal green setting to rest, take some time for yourself or take a relaxing break in the heart of the city. The 20 play structures dedicated to children allow families to get together to enjoy outdoor leisure activities at any time of the year.
Spread over 12 hectares, this incredible park brings together natural and varied vegetation to discover when you participate in an activity at the castle. Discover a French garden, an Italian garden, an exotic garden and even a conservatory orchard which brings together nearly 1,600 fruit trees. An arboretum also lists around twenty of the most remarkable tree species in the park, itself labeled "Remarkable Tree Ensemble".
This park tells a beautiful story since it takes its name from the Villa Lawrance which was of Flemish and Germanic style. Now accessible to the public, it offers a green setting to the north of the city for locals and tourists happy to admire century-old trees like the Ashes of the Atlas and the Ashes of Lebanon, while children have fun on the playground and on the rides.

True ecosystems made up of trees, vegetation and varied plants, gardens are wonderful green spaces where you can stroll at any time of the year.
Not one, but several gardens are accessible throughout the year in Viven, 20 km north of Pau. Labeled "Remarkable Garden", it reveals rose gardens, a vegetable garden, a pond and a magnificent dovecote to discover during a self-guided, guided or group visit from May 15 to October 15. There is an entrance fee, but it is worth it since the garden of the Château de Viven brings together incredible plant and animal biodiversity.
Open to the public between May and October, this garden presented by the association Conservatoire des Légumes Anciens du Béarn is a true showcase of biodiversity. Spread over more than 6,500 m2 while respecting the soil and the environment, it reveals a superb garden of forgotten vegetables (around 500 species), an orchard of 120 fruit trees including 70 apple trees of old local varieties as well as a small pond of 20 m2 which shelters a very rich flora and fauna. Many activities are organized on this tourist site labeled "Remarkable Garden".
You'll find it behind the Heritage House, with its square shape typical of medieval architecture. Its division into four plots recalls the Earth and its four seasons, according to the very precise symmetry of the time. You can observe 23 varieties of medicinal and vegetable plants that helped the monks support the community. Next to the garden, a rest area has been created with a bench and a portico topped with a rose bush, ideal for resting and meditating.
Take a trip around the world along a path that takes you to discover the flora of different continents, including the Far East, China, Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and even America. The spaces created by the city's gardeners extend over 2,500 m2 of greenery, accessible free of charge in both winter and summer.
Located opposite the train station, they offer a sublime panorama between palm trees, magnolias, and banana trees that appear against the backdrop of the mountain range. Follow the Roy trail that winds its way to the Boulevard des Pyrénées and take the time to admire this incredible vegetation at any time of year. Access is free and open, with an arrival possible by funicular.
