The discovery begins with the parks, which are vast expanses of natural landscapes and vegetation.
Designated a "Remarkable Garden," this 22-hectare national estate is the successor to the vast domain of the Kings of Navarre. The wooded park and the Basse-Plante (lower garden) form the green lung of the city of Pau, a popular place for a stroll, open from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm. Take a break along the paths to admire magnificent views of the Pyrenees mountain range, and take advantage of your visit to step back in time at Pau Castle.
This green space, laid out on the former estate of Countess Anna de Noailles in 1878, is magnificent, with its well-maintained paths leading to the bandstand and the lake with its bald cypress trees. Its English style is the work of landscape architect Henri Martinet in 1898, highlighting the centuries-old trees and diverse plant life.

This is a verdant place beloved by young and old alike. Spanning 12 hectares, this incredible park boasts a diverse range of natural vegetation to discover when you participate in an activity at the château. Explore a French formal garden, an Italian garden, an exotic garden, and even a heritage orchard with nearly 1,600 fruit trees. An arboretum also features some twenty of the park's most remarkable tree species, and the park itself has been designated a "Remarkable Tree Ensemble."
This park tells a beautiful story, as it takes its name from the Villa Lawrance, which was built in a Flemish and Germanic style. Now open to the public, it offers a verdant setting in the north of the city for residents and tourists alike, who are delighted to admire centuries-old trees such as the Atlas and Lebanon ash trees, while children enjoy themselves in the playground and on the rides.

Gardens , veritable ecosystems composed of trees, vegetation and a variety of plants, are wonderful green spaces to stroll through at any time of the year.
Not one, but several gardens are open year-round in Viven, 20 km north of Pau. Designated a "Remarkable Garden," it features rose gardens, a vegetable garden, a pond, and a magnificent dovecote, all accessible on a self-guided, guided, or group tour from May 15th to October 15th. There is an entrance fee, but it's well worth it, as the gardens of the Château de Viven boast incredible plant and animal biodiversity.
Open to the public from May to October, this garden, presented by the Béarn Heritage Vegetable Conservatory Association, is a true showcase of biodiversity. Spanning over 6,500 m² and cultivated with respect for the soil and the environment, it features a superb garden of forgotten vegetables (approximately 500 species), an orchard of 120 fruit trees, including 70 apple trees of old local varieties, and a small 20 m² pond that shelters a rich array of flora and fauna. Numerous events are organized at this tourist site , which has been awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label.
You'll find it behind the Heritage House, its square shape typical of medieval architecture. Its division into four sections evokes the Earth and its four seasons, reflecting the precise symmetry of the period. Here you can observe 23 varieties of medicinal and vegetable plants that helped the monks sustain the community. Next to the garden, a rest area has been created with a bench and a rose-covered pergola, ideal for relaxation and meditation.
Take off on a true journey around the world along a pathway that leads you to discover the flora of different continents, from the Far East, China, Central Asia, the Near East, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and even the Americas. The spaces landscaped by the city's gardeners cover 2,500 m² of greenery, accessible free of charge in both winter and summer.
Located opposite the train station, they offer a sublime panorama of palm trees, magnolias, and banana trees against the backdrop of the mountain range. Follow the Sentier du Roy (King's Path) which winds its way to the Boulevard des Pyrénées and take the time to admire this incredible vegetation at any time of year. Access is free and open to all, with the option of arriving by funicular.
