Under the Béarn prefecture, Oloron is also the oldest town in Béarn with more than 2000 years of history. The town occupies a strategic geographical position at the confluence of three valleys and two gaves, Ossau and Aspe. Oloron Ste Marie was born in 1858 from the merger of the communes of Oloron and Ste Marie, by imperial decree.
It is a city with a very strong Hispanic influence, twinned with Jaca, it welcomed the Spanish Republicans from 1937, and even today, many Olorones have Spanish origins.
