The "One Dog, One Shepherd" Association: the soul of pastoralism in the Ossau Valley
In the heart of the magnificent Ossau Valley, the association "Un Chien, un Berger" (One Dog, One Shepherd) brings the Pyrenean heritage to life with contagious passion. Based in Bielle since its creation in 2019, this independent organization has dedicated itself to promoting the age-old bond between humans, dogs, and flocks. Far more than a simple technical practice, it's a true way of life that these enthusiasts share with visitors and locals alike.
The excellence of herd work
A true training center, the association caters to a diverse audience. Agricultural professionals find a space for further development to strengthen their bond with their living and working animals. But openness is also key: individuals wishing to introduce their four-legged companions to herding can benefit from supervised courses, where patience and respect for the animal are paramount.
A summer at the rhythm of the summer pastures
For nature lovers and those interested in pastoralism, the association offers a unique experience in partnership with a shepherd in the Aspe Valley. From mid-May to mid-September, it is possible to book an appointment for a total immersion in the high mountains. A rare opportunity to discover the reality of the shepherd's profession and to observe the meticulously choreographed movements of the dogs at work in real-life conditions.
The highlight of the summer season remains the grand sheepdog competition, which has become an unmissable event since 2020.
Mark your calendars: on July 19, 2026, the magic will happen in Arudy.
Much more than a competition, this day is a great, ideal community celebration. Between the local producers' market, the artisans, the friendly refreshment stand and the inflatable games for children, the event celebrates the authenticity of a region that moves forward without subsidies, solely through the strength of volunteer work and passion.
Whether you are an expert or simply curious to discover the living traditions of Béarn, Un Chien, un Berger offers you an authentic interlude, far from the beaten track.
