About

    • Viven Castle – History, charm and nature north of Pau

Just 20 km north of Pau, in the heart of Béarn, the Château de Viven stands proudly on a promontory overlooking the Luy-de-France valley. Surrounded by splendid gardens awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label, this exceptional place combines heritage, nature and the art of living.

      A castle steeped in history

First mentioned in the 11th century, the Château de Viven took its current form in the 18th century, when it was rebuilt in 1756 by the Marquis de Mesplès. Its elegant architecture, balanced facades and imposing dormer roof reflect the classical style of that era.
Listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments since 1989, the château retains its outbuildings, dovecote, and former dependencies. Since 1982, the Graciet family has passionately dedicated itself to the restoration and enhancement of this Béarn heritage site, which is now open to the public.

      The gardens: a remarkable setting

Spanning nearly three hectares, the Gardens of the Château de Viven invite you on a poetic stroll where French style and English romantic atmosphere blend together.
Awarded the Remarkable Garden label since 2006, they reveal a unique botanical collection : boxwood-lined paths, a water lily pond, a bamboo grove, a plant maze, a rose garden with a thousand varieties, and even a permaculture vegetable garden.
Each tree and shrub is geolocated and identified by a QR code giving access to its botanical sheet – a fun and educational experience, perfect for families!

A visit to enjoy in every season

From May 15th to October 15th, the gardens are open to visitors from 1 pm to 7 pm, either independently or with a guide. The site remains accessible by appointment outside of these times of year.
And to extend the pleasure, a picnic area with tables and chairs allows you to enjoy a nature break in an enchanting setting.
