Stargazing in Béarn-Pyrénées

An exceptional destination for astrotourism

Béarn-Pyrénées, nestled in southwestern France and bordered by the majestic Pyrenees mountain range, is an incredible tourist destination for stargazing. With 14% of its territory spared from light pollution, this region is one of the few to preserve exceptional skies, a little corner of paradise for astronomers of all levels. The Milky Way can be observed with the naked eye, particularly from the remote peaks of the Pyrenees, or with a telescope for those better equipped. Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Evening Star, Polaris… You'll be dazzled by the stars !

The best spots for stargazing in Béarn-Pyrénées

Choose an evening with clear skies to ensure you can spot the sought-after points of light, and opt for the summer months between June and September, which are the best for stargazing. Ready? All that's left is to choose your spot.

  • The Col d'Aubisque (1709m altitude): a timeless classic. Easily accessible by car, this natural viewpoint offers a 360° panorama of the Pyrenees mountain range, far from any artificial light.
  • Lake Bious-Artigues: at the foot of the famous Pic du Midi d'Ossau, the reflection of the stars in the water of the lake offers a doubly magical spectacle.
  • The Heights of Monein : for those who prefer the hills of Jurançon, the heights offer an unobstructed view towards the Pyrenees mountain range, ideal for night photographers.

Take the opportunity to go hiking at the Col d'Aubisque or to discover the Jurançon vineyards.

The Night of the Stars, a luminous and national event

To prolong the magic, nothing beats a night of total immersion. Here are our suggestions for an unforgettable stay:

  • The nomadic adventure with "Here, There and Everywhere" : rent a converted vintage VW camper van and escape with complete freedom. Settle in facing the mountains, open the roof, and drift off to sleep counting shooting stars from your cozy bed. A retro and poetic experience to get closer to nature.
  • Guided bivouac in the Ossau Valley: several mountain guides offer outings including an introduction to reading the sky and sleeping in a tent (or under the stars for the bravest!).
  • The authentic charm of camping: for lovers of the "real" outdoors, Béarn abounds with campsites ideally located outside urban areas. Pitching your tent in a Pyrenean valley is like having an open-air planetarium right from your sleeping bag.

Events not to be missed

Every year, Béarn resonates with the rhythm of major astronomical events:

  • The Night of the Stars (early August): a national event relayed by many Béarn communes (such as Orthez or Mourenx) with conferences and free observations with telescopes.
  • The Gallo-Roman Museum of Claracq and its interpretive trail : an amazing site which regularly organizes astronomy evenings (often around August 14th), linking ancient history and the observation of the cosmos.
