The bastide of Bellocq is a jewel of medieval architecture in Béarn, and it is well worth a visit.

A rich and strategic history

Bellocq is one of the oldest fortified towns in the region. Its strategic location, close to the Gave, made it an important control point.

• A checkerboard plan characteristic of the bastides: the streets of Bellocq intersect at right angles, forming a perfect grid. This plan, very widespread in the bastides, facilitated the movement of troops and the organization of the city.
• An imposing castle : dominating the bastide, the castle of Bellocq is a witness to the strategic importance of the city. Built between 1250 and 1280, it was remodeled in the 14th century by Gaston Fébus. Although partially in ruins, it offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings.
• A fortified church : the church of Bellocq, with its square bell tower, is another defensive element of the city. It bears witness to the desire to protect the inhabitants in the event of an attack.

A living heritage

Today, Bellocq is a dynamic town that has preserved its rich heritage. Visitors can stroll through the narrow streets, admire the half-timbered houses and discover the history of the town thanks to the explanatory panels.

The historic center of Bellocq is a real open-air museum. The old houses, porches and wells bear witness to medieval architecture.
