Whether you're tempted by pleasant walks on the hillsides of Vic-Bilh, want to take on the challenge of the mountain passes and peaks that rise in the Pyrenean valleys, or prefer to explore the forests of the Pays de Nay, there's something to satisfy every desire in the region. Lace up your hiking boots, we'll reveal our favorite hiking trails in Béarn!

Long-distance hiking on the Camino de Santiago

The Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) has been used since the 9th century. It's safe to say it's a sure bet for hikers from all over Europe. The routes are very well laid out and maintained. The signage and advice provided by the Tourist Offices are excellent. Along the way, you can admire a wealth of interesting religious heritage. Furthermore, in the towns and villages along the way, you'll find information, equipment, and services tailored to your needs.

  • The GR10 passes through the Pierre Saint-Martin Massif and the Pyrenees National Park. The mountain views there are breathtaking.
  • The GR78, part of the Piedmont Way, takes you through the Ossau and Aspe Valleys. You'll follow the Gave d'Ossau river through meadow landscapes. It's the perfect route to discover the pastoral traditions of Béarn.
  • The GR653, part of the Arles Way, also known as the "Via Tolosana," follows the Gave d'Aspe river and its valley. It's a great opportunity to try whitewater sports: canyoning, rafting, canoeing…

Hiking in the Ossau Valley

The Ossau Valley is a wild and natural site. It is protected by the Ossau Valley Nature Reserve. It encompasses diverse environments, including cliffs, mountain passes, and grazing meadows. The flora and fauna are very typical of Pyrenean valleys and boast a rich biodiversity. Here are a few great hikes:

  • The Ossau Valley Nature Reserve covers 83 hectares. It is crisscrossed by paths, which allow visitors to observe many animals, including griffon vultures.
  • The Plateau du Benou is a favorite site for families, as it is full of activities: hiking, Nordic walking in winter, horse riding... It is located near the Col Marie-Blanque.
  • Vulture Cliff: This is a tourist site and observation point for vultures, which come to nest along the cliff. A 12 km hike leads there from the village of Aste-Béon. It is a long hike with significant elevation gain.
  • The Col de Marie Blanque : it connects the Aspe and Ossau valleys. Mountain trails will guide you to the summit. The road is also suitable for cycling. Its view of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau. He truly deserves his rise to the top.

Walks starting from Lake Artouste

Lake Artouste is a large mountain lake in the Ossau Valley. It is fed by the Soussouéou, Arrémoulit, and Arious rivers, as well as other small streams. It is an exceptional spot, ideal for walking, especially in summer, as the surroundings remain cool. Several hikes lead to it. The longest start from Laruns or Eaux-Bonnes. Others start from the lake and take you to other equally pleasant mountain lakes.

  • The Soussouéou Valley : this is a 13 km loop, through valleys and forests.
  • The Lac de Fabrèges is also a loop trail, which connects the two lakes.
  • Lake Arrémoulit : you will pass through the Col d'Arious to reach the lake, after a 13 km walk.
  • The Orteig loop : a path often covered in snow, which takes you through the Arious pass, then the Sobe pass.

Climbing mountain passes

The Ossau, Aspe, and Barétous valleys are Pyrenean valleys that stretch out below impressive mountains. The passes and peaks of Béarn are very popular with experienced hikers who appreciate the challenge of climbing its summits.

  • The Col de la Pierre-Saint-Martin: 1760 meters from Arette, 25 km long by road. This hike is reserved for very experienced walkers.
  • The Pourtalet Pass : Located in the commune of Laruns, it lies on the border between France and Spain. It allows you to cross into Spain and discover another side of the Pyrenees mountains.
  • The Col de Marie Blanque: While very popular with cyclists, it's also a favorite with hikers. There are walks for all levels, if you're not aiming for the climb.
  • The Col de Soulor is an easy circuit, suitable for families. Starting from La Sagette, allow approximately one hour to reach the cable car.
  •  The Col d'Aubisque : A foot race takes place there every year, for a change from walking.
